We are quite fortunate here in Middleton to surf with Southern Wright Whales quite often during the winter months. On rare occasions, you can sit in the rear of the lineup and hear the whale blast a spray of air and water from their blowhole. It's a fantastic experience!
Whale watching has a long history in South Australia, going back to the early days of nautical exploration. Today, it is a key part of the region's tourism business, drawing visitors from all over the world who want to witness the majesty of these gentle giants up close.
Port Elliot provides a picturesque setting for whale watching, with its craggy cliffs and sandy beaches serving as ideal vantage spots for observing whales as they travel down the coast.
Victor Harbor is another popular whale-watching destination, famed for its tranquil seas and regular sightings of Southern Right and Humpback Whales throughout the winter months. Sometimes you can spot whales when abseiling with us "Off the Bluff."
Encounter Bay, located between Port Elliot and Victor Harbour, is ideal for whale watching expeditions. The bay's clean waters provide excellent visibility, making it a wonderful location for seeing these majestic creatures in their native environment.
Basham's Beach in Middleton is also a good site to watch whales on occasion. They are also occasionally seen near Middleton Point. Whales are frequently seen while cycling the Encounter Bikeway along the coast between Middleton and Port Elliot. You can rent our bikes if you don't have your own!
Make plans to visit the Fleurieu Peninsula and see whales in the Winter; it will be a wonderful experience. It is definitely worth your time!
